Why Reproductive Mental Health Matters
The reproductive period, sometimes called the perinatal period, spans pregnancy through the first year after birth and is a time of profound emotional, physical, and relational change. Alongside moments of happiness and growth, this chapter can also stir up unexpected waves of grief, anxiety, or feelings of disconnection.
In fact, according to Postpartum Support International (PSI), about 1 in 5 birthing individuals experience perinatal mood or anxiety disorders (PMADs), including depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, or PTSD connected to pregnancy, birth, or loss.
Whether you’re preparing for parenthood, healing after a traumatic birth, grieving the loss of a pregnancy or infant, or navigating the challenges of fertility, every part of you may feel these changes deeply. While many expect this season to be only joyful, it’s completely natural for complicated emotions to arise. You might find yourself feeling sadness, worry, or even lost at times. Please know, these feelings are not a reflection of your strength or your love, and you are never alone in them.
Taking care of your mental and emotional well-being during these transitional times can help ease pain, bring a sense of meaning and hope, and allow you to feel more grounded and connected. Reaching out for support is a deeply courageous step, one that honors your unique story and opens the door to healing, regardless of where your journey has taken you so far.
